When most people begin planning their first trip to Italy, the same names usually come up—Rome, Florence, Venice, maybe the Amalfi Coast. But if you ask me where I’d tell someone to spend a few days to experience authentic northern Italy, Bologna is always near the top of my list. It’s a city that doesn’t seem to try too hard to impress you. Instead, it quietly wins you over. You’ll find miles of beautiful porticoes, lively piazzas filled with locals instead of tour groups, and some of the best food you’ll eat anywhere in Italy. This is the heart of Emilia-Romagna—the region that gave the world Parmigiano Reggiano, traditional balsamic vinegar, mortadella, fresh tortellini, tagliatelle al ragù, and so many other iconic Italian flavors. Unlike some of Italy’s busiest destinations, Bologna still feels like a city that Italians live in rather than one that’s been built around tourism. You can spend the morning wandering medieval streets, enjoy a long lunch without feeling rushed, stop for an afternoon espresso in a neighborhood café, and finish the evening with an unforgettable meal—all without fighting shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. Another reason I recommend Bologna so often is that it’s surprisingly affordable. Hotels often provide better value than Florence or Venice, restaurants are reasonably priced for the quality you receive, and you’ll often feel like you’re getting a more authentic experience for your travel budget.
