One thing I’ve learned over the years is that the right guide can completely change how a destination feels.A smaller walking tour, a local food experience, or even a private guide who genuinely loves their city often helps travelers connect with a place in a much deeper way than trying to see everything on their own. The best experiences usually aren’t the biggest group tours. They’re often the smaller moments led by local artists, historians, chefs, or guides who help you understand the culture and rhythm of a place beyond the major landmarks. And once you understand the city better, everything else starts feeling more connected. You notice more.
You slow down more.
You stop trying to “check boxes” and start experiencing the destination differently. One of my favorite travel tips:
always ask a great local guide where they eat, walk, have coffee, or spend time when they’re not working. Some of the best off-the-beaten-path recommendations I’ve ever received in Italy came from tour guides after the official tour had already ended. A great guide can shape the rest of your trip far beyond just those few hours together. And a quick Italy etiquette tip that surprises many travelers:
it’s completely acceptable to tip a great tour guide if you enjoyed the experience, especially on smaller or private tours. At the same time, tipping culture in Italy is very different from the United States, and large restaurant tips generally aren’t expected the same way they are back home. Most Italians simply round up slightly or leave a small gesture for exceptional service. This particular evening was actually in Bologna — long table, local food, wine, conversation, and absolutely no rushing.
