Why Bologna Became My Favorite Surprise in ItalyWhen most travelers think about Italy, cities like Rome, Florence and Venice usually come to mind first. But after spending several days in Bologna this spring, I found myself wondering why more travelers aren’t talking about it. Bologna feels different. The historic center is surprisingly walkable thanks to miles of covered porticos that protect you from both rain and summer sun. Unlike many Italian cities built on steep hills, much of Bologna is relatively flat, making it easy to explore on foot. What surprised me most wasn’t a famous landmark—it was the food. Bologna sits in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, a region responsible for some of Italy’s most famous culinary treasures, including Parmigiano Reggiano, Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, Prosciutto di Parma and Mortadella. One of my favorite experiences was visiting local producers and seeing firsthand how these products are still made today. Walking through aging rooms filled with prosciutto and learning about the traditions behind these foods gives you a whole new appreciation for what ends up on your plate. And then there’s the pasta. If you visit Bologna, don’t leave without trying Tortellini in Brodo, a local specialty that is simple, comforting and deeply connected to the region’s traditions. For wine lovers, this is also the home of Lambrusco, a sparkling red wine that pairs surprisingly well with the region’s rich cuisine. Another reason I love recommending Bologna is its convenience. The city is one of Italy’s major rail hubs, making it an easy addition to a Florence, Venice or Milan itinerary. Best of all, Bologna still feels more local and less crowded than many of Italy’s most visited destinations. It’s a city where you can slow down, enjoy long meals and experience a side of Italy that many travelers miss.
