Do You Need an International Driving Permit for Italy?

If you plan to rent a car and drive in Italy, you should get an International Driving Permit before leaving the United States.

An International Driving Permit, often called an IDP, is not a separate driver’s license. It is an official translation of your valid U.S. driver’s license and is commonly required when driving abroad.

If your itinerary includes Tuscany, Umbria, Puglia, the Dolomites, or countryside stays, a rental car can be very useful. But in cities like Florence, Rome, Venice, Bologna, and Milan, trains and walking are usually much easier.

Before renting a car in Italy, make sure you understand:

• ZTL restricted driving zones

• Parking rules

• Toll roads

• Manual vs. automatic transmission availability

• Pickup and drop-off locations

• Insurance coverage

• Whether every driver has the required documents

Bring both your regular U.S. driver’s license and your International Driving Permit. The IDP works alongside your license — it does not replace it.

How to Get One

U.S. travelers can obtain an International Driving Permit through AAA or AATA, the two organizations authorized in the United States. (USAGov⁠)

Through AAA, you typically need:

• A completed IDP application

• Two passport-style photos

• A valid U.S. driver’s license

• A copy of both sides of your license if applying by mail

• The permit fee, currently $20 (AAA⁠)

You do not need to be a AAA member to apply.
